Adrian Chiles’s article (Eric Idle has had tons of celebrities staying at his house. God, it must be exhausting, 23 September) rings true. As children, we always knew when guests were becoming irritating or had outstayed their welcome as my mother would say: “Now, is there anything else you want before you leave?”

The judge “sitting prone” most likely went to Oxford (Judge wrong to hear case from bed while recovering from surgery, court says, 23 September). I attended a matriculation there 50 years ago, where the vice-chancellor implored students to fully take part in university life and not “stand supine on the sidelines”.

I can top Jonathan Hauxwell’s concoction (Letters, 21 September). As a student, I made my girlfriend (now wife of 55 years) a “fridge stew” containing pork luncheon meat, baked beans, potatoes, boiled eggs and kippers. She took over the cooking soon afterwards.

Ordering a book before it has been published is still just ordering, not “preordering” (Letters, 25 September). It’s the same as asking for a meal that hasn’t yet been cooked.
