ECOWAS Mission Leaves Guinea-Bissau After President Threatens Expulsion

A mission deployed by the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, to mediate an election dispute in Guinea-Bissau has departed after President Umaro Sissoco Embalo threatened to expel it. The mission, which arrived in late February, aimed to help resolve disagreements over the timing of elections, postponed by Embalo until November 30. The opposition, claiming his term expired last week, opposed the delay. Despite preparing a draft roadmap for 2025 elections, ECOWAS left after tensions with the president. This development adds to ongoing political instability in Guinea-Bissau, which has seen military coups and attempts to oust Embalo.
