Nursing Union Labels NHI Opponents as ‘Anti-Human Rights’

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA), the country’s largest nursing union, has criticized those opposing the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI), describing them as “anti-human rights.”

DENOSA is currently hosting its ninth national congress at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Gauteng. The three-day gathering aims to deliberate on and establish the union’s stance on critical healthcare sector issues.

DENOSA President Simon Hlungwani emphasized the union’s strong support for NHI, asserting that opposition to universal healthcare coverage undermines fundamental human rights and social justice.

“Anyone who believes government services represent human rights and social justice should not oppose universal healthcare coverage through NHI. Those opposing it are essentially opposing social justice and human rights,” Hlungwani stated.
