Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has expressed his willingness to formally apologise to the principal of a Matatiele school, who was incorrectly identified as a suspect in the alleged rape of a seven-year-old pupil.
The school was thrust into the spotlight earlier this month after reports emerged of the disturbing incident.
In a letter to lobby group AfriForum — which has been representing the principal — Mchunu acknowledged that the headmaster was wrongly implicated and took full responsibility for the public statement that pointed to him as a suspect.
However, the minister insisted that there was no intent to defame the school principal.
