FIFA Club World Cup: This might be the reason why Jose Riveiro asked for an early release

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro will be in charge of his final match for the club on Tuesday, but his next destination remains uncertain.

In a statement issued Monday morning, the Pirates announced that Riveiro had requested an early release from his contract due to signing with a new club.

His last match with the Buccaneers will be on Tuesday in a Betway Premiership fixture against Lamontville Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium. Riveiro’s contract was originally scheduled to run until the end of June 2025.

Jose Riveiro jumps ship early

Reports indicate that he may have signed with an unnamed club just days after revealing that he would not return as Pirates’ coach for the next season. At that time, Orlando Pirates were still in contention for the CAF Champions League and the Betway Premiership. Unfortunately, the team dropped points and was eliminated from the CAF Champions League shortly after his announcement to leave the club.

With the Nedbank Cup being the only trophy left to compete for, it became clear why his new club wanted him to join after the final match.

Which team will Jose Riveiro join in the coming days?

Riveiro (49) has been linked to Wydad Casablanca since announcing his departure from Pirates. Rulani Mokwena, who took over as Wydad coach in July, has recently parted ways with the Moroccan club.

Wydad is set to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off next month in the United States. Four African clubs will be competing in the tournament: Al Ahly (Egypt), Espérance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), and Wydad AC.

With the Botola Pro league completed, Jose Riveiro is likely to join Wydad in the coming days as he prepares for the FIFA Club World Cup.

If the Spaniard did not have a major tournament to prepare for, he would have stayed until 28 May, when the Pirates play their last game of the season. It seems that Jose Riveiro’s future club requested him to be available after the Nedbank Cup final, allowing sufficient time to prepare before the FIFA Club World Cup.

Another team that Riveiro might join is Al Ahly after the Egyptian giants sacked Swiss coach Marcel Koller last month.

Do you think Riveiro will join Wydad?
