DIRCO Slams ‘Fabricated’ Interview Claims About US Envoy Mcebisi Jonas

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has strongly denied a report by Semafor alleging an interview with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Special Envoy to the United States, Mcebisi Jonas.

In an official statement, DIRCO labelled the claims as “misinformation” and insisted that no such interview ever took place.

The appointment of Jonas, following the recall of former Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, was previously reported by IOL. His appointment comes amid diplomatic tensions between South Africa and the United States, especially following a US funding freeze linked to unfounded claims that the South African government is preparing for unlawful land confiscations.

“DIRCO categorically denies the claims made by Semafor regarding an interview with His Excellency, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Special Envoy to the United States, Mcebisi Jonas,” the department said.

According to DIRCO, the statements attributed to Jonas in Semafor’s Friday newsletter are entirely baseless. “They neither reflect his views nor correspond to any actual interview, as no such engagement took place,” the department stressed.

DIRCO raised alarm over the alleged fabrication of quotes attributed to Jonas about countering misinformation in the US. “Regrettably, these assertions are entirely false,” the statement read.

The department further clarified that Jonas, due to the seriousness of his diplomatic role, will not be engaging with media for the time being.

“His mandate—to advance South Africa’s strategic partnership with the United States—remains his sole priority, and any distractions will not be entertained,” DIRCO stated.

Reaffirming Jonas’s status as an official government representative, DIRCO condemned the circulation of unauthorised statements or representations made in his name.

“The government neither recognises, endorses, nor condones any unauthorised individuals or entities claiming to represent South Africa’s interests in formal or informal dialogues,” the department added.

DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri reiterated the importance of accurate communication: “South Africa remains committed to transparent, accountable, and dignified diplomacy. We urge all stakeholders to rely solely on official communications for accurate information and to respect the integrity of Mr Jonas’s pivotal role in fostering international cooperation.”
