Former Banker Thiam Emerges as Key Challenger Ahead of Ivory Coast Polls

Former Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam is stepping up his bid for Ivory Coast’s presidency, despite lingering questions about his eligibility. With just seven months until the October election, a potential challenge over Thiam’s French citizenship could derail his campaign. While his name appeared on the recently published voter register, his candidacy could be challenged or declined by the Constitutional Court. Nevertheless, Thiam remains confident, rallying supporters in Paris and expressing optimism about his party’s growing strength. Backed by a coalition of 20 opposition parties, Thiam has become the main challenger to the ruling RHDP, which has yet to announce its candidate. Meanwhile, President Alassane Ouattara remains silent on whether he will seek another term.
