Police Minister Directs Provinces to Compile Lists of Serious Crime Offenders

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has instructed all South African provinces to compile and submit detailed lists of individuals involved in serious criminal activities. This directive follows Gauteng’s identification of 450 crime kingpins linked to offenses such as cash-in-transit heists, hijackings, and ATM bombings. In the past two months, Gauteng authorities have arrested at least 150 of these individuals, with 15 reported fatalities.

Speaking at a policing summit held at Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park, Mchunu emphasized the necessity of understanding the specific number of criminals operating within each province to effectively combat crime. He stated, “As you heard, Gauteng has about 450 criminals that we should trace, and we are going to go to another province to find out how many criminals are there. In fact, a long time ago I said this, we want the number of criminals because crime doesn’t just happen, it doesn’t come from heaven, there are people behind it.”

This initiative aims to enhance targeted law enforcement efforts by identifying and apprehending individuals responsible for serious crimes across the country.
