Ramaphosa Calls for Calm Amid Ambassador Rasool’s Controversial Return

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appealed to political parties and organizations to avoid actions that could further inflame tensions with the United States ahead of expelled Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool’s return.

South Africa’s former ambassador to the US is set to arrive back in the country on Sunday. During a media briefing on Thursday, the Presidency acknowledged plans for gatherings to welcome Rasool but urged restraint to prevent exacerbating diplomatic tensions.

Rasool’s expulsion has intensified existing strains between South Africa and the United States. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya emphasized the importance of moderation, stating:

“We urge all political groups planning homecoming events for Ambassador Rasool to act responsibly and avoid activities that could be perceived as provocative or further damage our delicate relationship with the United States.”

Several ANC branches in the Western Cape have already circulated invitations encouraging supporters to attend welcoming rallies.

Magwenya noted that President Ramaphosa would directly engage ANC members to encourage moderation.
